UNIT II: Overview of the Learner-Centered Psychological Principles

  Niño D. Estolas, M.Ed., LPT

The Learner-Centered Psychological Principles, often referred to as the "Learner-Centered Principles," are a set of ten guiding principles that provide a framework for understanding and enhancing the learning process. Developed by a panel of experts in the fields of psychology and education, these principles emphasize the central role of the learner and promote effective teaching practices. They are particularly valuable for educators and instructional designers seeking to create learner-centered educational environments.

Here is an overview of the Learner-Centered Psychological Principles:

  1. Learner-Centered: This principle places the learner at the core of the educational process. It acknowledges that learners are active participants who construct their own knowledge and understanding. Educators should adapt instruction to align with students' needs, interests, and prior knowledge.
  2. Knowledge-Centered: This principle underscores the importance of meaningful and organized knowledge. It highlights that learning should focus on central concepts and principles, providing a foundation for understanding and problem-solving in a given domain.
  3. Assessment-Centered: Assessment is not just about assigning grades but should serve as a tool for understanding and promoting learning. Formative assessment, in particular, plays a crucial role in providing feedback and guiding instruction.
  4. Community-Centered: Learning is a social activity, and this principle emphasizes the importance of collaboration and community in education. It encourages creating a supportive learning environment where students can interact with peers and mentors.
  5. Inclusivity and Equity: This principle calls for an inclusive educational environment that values diversity and addresses the needs of all learners, regardless of their background, abilities, or characteristics.
  6. Motivation and Emotion: Recognizing the role of motivation and emotion in learning, this principle encourages educators to foster a positive learning experience that engages students' interests, curiosity, and emotions.
  7. Development and Individual Differences: Learners vary in their development, experiences, and abilities. This principle advocates for accommodating these individual differences by providing flexible and differentiated instruction.
  8. Context: Learning is influenced by the context in which it occurs. Educators should consider the physical, social, and cultural context when designing learning experiences and tailoring instruction to fit the specific setting.
  9. Technology: In today's digital age, technology can enhance learning experiences. This principle promotes the effective and thoughtful use of technology to support and extend educational goals.
  10. Assessment for Understanding: Assessment should not merely test memorization but assess students' deep understanding and ability to apply knowledge in real-world contexts. It encourages assessments that measure higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills.

These Learner-Centered Psychological Principles serve as a valuable framework for educators and instructional designers, guiding them in creating meaningful and effective learning experiences that cater to the diverse needs of learners while fostering deep understanding and critical thinking.
